On September the 14th VS West members took part in the Solidarity Cup for Palestine at Selwyn park, Albion.
The solidarity event and fundraiser was organized by a collective of organisations in Melbourne's west, including Community Soccer Hub, Brimbank for Palestine, Maribyrnong for Palestine, Hobson Bay for Palestine, Wyndham for Palestine and Melton for Palestine.
Despite the terrible weather, 500 people attended and 26 teams took part in the friendly cup and off field activities.
Football has deep roots in Palestine going back to the 1800s, it’s described as the national and most popular sport and it has often been seen as a symbol of existence and resistance.
In what are shocking and heavy times, it was nice to see hundreds of free Palestine activists and supporters come together for football, food, music and a bit of fun to raise money for Palestine.
The event raised over $14,000, which is going to Palestine Sports For Life and the Gazan Urban Women Agripreneurs Forum.
Well done to everyone involved in organizing a great event to raise much needed money for Palestine and to continue building the free Palestine movement here in Melbourne. Check out our events page for upcoming events and campaigning.
