Mutullah Can Yolbulan (Mutu), Vic Socialists’ council candidate for Merlynston Creek ward in Hume City Council spoke at a Hume for Palestine rally on 13 May.
The rally was held outside the Hume City council meeting, calling on council to pass a BDS motion.
Mutu called out council’s continued inaction - “When it comes to listening to the community, when it’s about genocide, when it’s about our parks, this council in there is powerless. When you give them a call they say they can’t do anything, ‘my hands are tied’... Well if you don’t have any power, get off that seat because we are coming for you!”
Mutu also spoke about how Victorian Socialists are running council candidates all across Melbourne to elect candidates that are for people, not profit – councillors that will stand with Palestinians and against genocide.
Shamefully, council didn’t even table the motion – yet again showing their inaction and disregard in the face of genocide in Gaza.
