What to expect

Victoria has the largest and most militarised police force in the country, with police funding more than doubling over the past decade. This combined with the introduction of more punitive bail laws has seen the number of people entering the prison system increase 220%

All of this and a report by the state’s auditor general last year shows this has done nothing to improve safety in Victoria. Which comes as no surprise to socialists. The violent wing of the state: Police, Prisons and the entire criminal justice system does not exist to protect us but rather to protect the capitalist status quo and the 1%

In the wake of International Working Women’s Day, Victorian Socialists are holding this public forum to highlight the impact of the criminal justice system on women. A particularly pertinent discussion given the recent murder of Veronica Nelson, the expansion of the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre, a maximum-security women’s prison and the doubling of the number of women incarcerated over the past decade, with aboriginal women especially over represented.
