Hi, I'm Sue Munro, I'm an agency-enrolled nurse with experience in both the public and private sector. I’ve seen the inequality in our healthcare system up close, and I believe it needs to change.
I'm a single mum of two amazing young adults, each with disabilities. Living in the western suburbs, we struggle to access the services we need to get by. There have been times when I’ve had to check if I can afford to drive my daughter to Royal Melbourne Hospital because the ambulance will only take her as far as Werribee Mercy. The Mercy is the only public hospital in the rapidly expanding Wyndham area. It’s drastically underfunded and is often forced to turn patients away. On one occasion, it discharged my daughter despite her showing symptoms of brain swelling – resulting in another terrifying ambulance ride after she had a second and third seizure.
No one should have to have these experiences. Everyone deserves access to free healthcare, as well as decent education, transport and housing. Werribee has been taken for granted by the Labor Party, which just stands by while our services fall apart.
While we suffer, a short drive down the freeway companies like ExxonMobil, which operates the Altona Refinery, are making billions of dollars from destructive fossil fuels and turning the west into a toxic waste dump, but they haven't paid any tax in seven years!
It’s time to shake things up and let the government know we refuse to be taken for granted. Voting 1 Victorian Socialists means voting for real people with real battles who are prepared to fight for working class people, not the political hacks who are at the beck and call of big business.
