Right now in Australia, the profits of the rich and powerful are booming while ordinary working class people pay for the cost of living crisis.

Hi, I’m Kelly Cvetkova, Victorian Socialists candidate for Thomastown.

I'm a retail worker, a unionist and a student, and I’ve been a socialist activist for many years.

Right now in Australia, the profits of the rich and powerful are booming while ordinary working class people pay for the cost of living crisis. Politicians are out of touch with what it’s like to deal with the rising cost of groceries, fuel and energy, and no party is taking any meaningful action to alleviate those pressures. That’s why I’m running with Victorian Socialists – as someone facing these issues, I want to demand better for working class people and organise campaigns to fight back against the bosses and their political backers.

Not only are we experiencing a sharpening cost-of-living crisis and an ongoing pandemic, but the climate crisis is raging out of control. If we’re going to see radical climate action, it will take a mass movement powerful enough to force politicians to transition away from fossil fuels. That’s why I’m involved in Uni Students for Climate Justice, an activist collective that called the 30,000-strong demonstration in Melbourne at the time of the 2019–20 bushfires.

I’ve also been involved in combating attacks on higher education through the national Student Fightback campaign. With fee hikes, course cuts, staff sackings and million-dollar underpayment scandals, tertiary education is becoming harder and harder for poorer students to access. Universities are being run like big business, with all the cost-cutting “efficiencies” and service degradation that entails. Our universities shouldn’t be running surpluses in the millions of dollars at the same time as they steal wages, withhold pay rises and cut resources.

We need fighters who are ready to take on the system and all the forms of oppression it generates. If you want to see socialists in parliament standing up for ordinary people, get involved today!
