2024 Victorian Council Elections

This October, local council elections will take place across Victoria. Victorian Socialists will be standing candidates in as many areas as we can.

From the local to the global level, an out-of-control capitalist system is eroding the economic, social and environmental foundations of our society. To win our world back for workers and the communities we live in, we need
to build movements and elect representatives to stand against the destructive, profit-driven agenda that dominates politics.

Local governments, just like the state and federal governments, have grown increasingly cosy with big business and detached from the interests and aspirations of the communities they’re supposed to represent. That needs
to change.

Our candidates are community organisers, grassroots activists, and rank-and-file trade unionists. They’re used to taking on powerful interests,
and you can be sure that if elected, they’ll fight for you.

Our policies

Real action on housing costs
Housing should be a human right, not a money-making investment for the wealthiest few. We need more public housing and rent controls. We need a housing system that puts local communities and those in need ahead of big landlords, investors and developers.

Councils that put people before profit
The community suffers when councils put profits before people. We need councils that promote equitable, liveable and sustainable development—including taking action on the climate crisis—not ones that only listen to big business and big developers.

Fighting for local, and global, solidarity and justice
Whether it’s Israel’s genocide in Gaza, fighting for justice alongside First Nations people, or opposing racism and attacks on the LGBTIQ+ community: councils should speak out and act against injustice. We need councillors who will take a stand on the issues that matter.

No more sell-offs of council services and assets
The neoliberal agenda of privatisation has led to declining services, skyrocketing prices, and terrible conditions and wages for workers.
Victorian Socialists councillors will fight to preserve and expand what remains
of council run services like childcare and aged care, and stand against further sell-offs of public services and assets whether at a local, state,
or federal level.

Transparency and accountability to the community
Councils should champion and facilitate resident participation, and transparency and accountability in decision-making processes. We need councillors who will maintain regular contact with the community in their ward, including running regular community information forums and ensuring that community groups have the spaces, infrastructure and resources they need
to meet and organise.
